Being split into groups doing a project about groups brought a sense of clarity and a different perspective. Groups one’s presentation was a very engaging and informative experience on Intercultural communications. They went ahead and explained how a culture is a system of shared values, beliefs, attitudes, and norms, also informing the rest of the class how culture is shared and changed through communication. Furthermore, this groups showed us how values are standards of good and bad and they can change from person to person and culture to culture. During this group’s explanation of culture shock, I had fond memories of when I had personally experienced this challenge, I was stationed in Yokosuka, Japan for 2 years and seeing how different it truly was to the American norms I was used to was definitely a culture shock. One’s culture may define several aspects of their life; in most cases it affects the sense of individuality that everyone has creating a cultural identity. Group one did an amazing job presenting chapter 3, they really spread a lot of information in an engaging way.
Speaking about the differing types of characteristics, stages, and conflicts in groups was Group two. When presenting chapter nine, I personally feel like we did a really good job the members of my group really worked hard to transcribe and present the information that we learned about. We looked at and showed the most common group types and explained how communication influences each and every one of them. Furthermore, group two also showed how groups develop, the five stages of group development are forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning. When it comes to groups there can be conflict too, I was personally tasked with presenting this information to the class and I feel like I did a good job. The three types of conflict are Pseudo-Conflict, Issue-related conflict, and Personality-related conflict. People come from various differing cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds that can lead to approaching conflict differently, so it is very important to keep that in mind when dealing with conflict in a group setting.
Group three was tasked to present chapter 10 which covered leadership, group dynamics, and group presentations. I personally feel like group 3 did an awesome job presenting this information especially due to the time crunch we were all facing. Any member of the groups may display leadership qualities, in order to be a leader in a group setting one must be committed to the groups goal, keep everyone on track, complete deadlines and assign thing effectively, and encourage all members. As a leader one must also learn how to deal with conflict amongst the group. Group three also did an amazing job explain the importance of group dynamics, which is the way a group interacts with each other in order to achieve its goals. Staying on task and supporting fellow group members while also being comfortable and understanding is a key part to group dynamics. Showing us what group presentations depend on group three shows that the quality of individuals presentations goes along to support the overall group performance.
