The purpose of this project was to learn, inform, and educate ourselves and the audience about the differing types of disabilities. Group one’s presentation consisted of speaking about visual and physical impairments. I personally feel as if the members of group one did an amazing job creating an engaging and informative presentation. Learning how physical impairments are long-term conditions that can limit a person’s ability to move and coordinate actions as well as their stamina and dexterity. Group one delved into the effects and treatment processes for several physical impairments such as epilepsy, cerebral palsy, cystic fibrosis, spina bifida, and amputations. Furthermore, also explaining how visual impairments differ from person to person and how some eye conditions can be treated with eyeglasses or contact lenses. Group one explains how certain visual impairments decrease the ability to see, some of these impairments can cause issues in day-to-day life and are not fixable by refraction. Going over the symptoms and treatments of several visual impairments such as the loss of peripheral vision, blurred vision, extreme light sensitivity, and night blindness.
Group Two delved into the effects treatments and general information of Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Personally, I feel that group two had an effective and informative presentation showing the audience examples of how people live, seek treatment, and learn with these disabilities. A TBI is defined as an injury that can affect how the brain works, it can be caused by a blow or jot to the head or a penetrating injury. This type of injury can result in physical, cognitive, social, emotional and behavioral symptoms. A CT scan is the best way to evaluate patients who may be affected by a TBI. Each TBI and their symptoms can vary from person to person. Autism is a difference in development characterized by difficulties with social interaction and communication. It is mostly diagnosed in the early stages of childhood development and is mostly related to difference in behavior. Symptoms are normally split into one of four categories, behavioral, developmental, cognitive, and psychological.
Group three went over specific learning disabilities and deaf/hard of hearing. Going over deaf culture and how its is to have no hearing or very little hearing group three informs and educates the audience. Showing the audience how deaf culture was first recognized in 1965, the culture is a set of learned behaviors that share a language, values, rules behaviors, and traditions. With over 100 different types of sign language in the world deaf culture is vast and unique. Group three also informs the audience about specific learning disabilities (SLD), an SLD is a disorder where difficulty is found in using one or more of the basic psychological processes involved in understanding and using language. This presentation also delves into the assisted technologies that both deaf people and people with an SLD use in order to learn. This project was very eye opening and informative, and I feel like every person in the class became more aware of the challenges that a disability can bring.
Very good post! I agree that we all became more aware of the challenges that are faced by people with disabilities.
